Rear-wheel drive German business-class sedan with automatic transmission and leather interior, but not Mercedes or BMW? The mystery is not difficult, although not everyone remembers that the classic layout in business class is possible



in a car with a lightning bolt on the radiator grille. A forgotten hero of corporate parking lots and already everywhere successful lovers of comfort – Opel Omega B for 100,000 rubles.

With the iluet of the budgetary rival of the German troika, twenty-three years later, it does not look outdated at all. It is unlikely that it was conceived, but put it mentally next to the Opel E39 and W210. Is Omega really lost against the background of fellow countrymen?

They say that at the 1994 Moscow Motor Show, where the Germans brought a new product, it was impossible to break through to the Opel stand.

Ditching the heavy suitcase aesthetic of its predecessor was definitely good for the Omega. The calm flowing lines of the body, which retained the dimensions befitting the class, are a living embodiment of a skillfully found balance between solidity and swiftness. No need for even a minimal body kit – there is no better performance for the exterior.

It means that the designer did not work in vain, drawing the concept of the Cadillac Aurora, which from the master’s shoulder gave his style to a European relative. Alas, quid pro quo was bearish. Omega’s facelifted Cadillac Catera isn’t the most glorious part of GM history.

Inside.

Following the resignation of the Senator, Omega took over as Opel’s flagship. Her first decree was the proclamation of a new design language for the brand, which is especially noticeable in a fairly prettier interior. Retaining the well-defined driver’s area familiar from the predecessor and the usual location of the main controls, including the on-board computer display to the right of the tidy, the interior rounded out in the right places and healed in complete harmony with the exterior.

Impressive interior space, level of trim and attention to detail – the Omega has something to brag about in the crowd of business-class sedans. Chubby door cards upholstered in thick leather are squeezed a good half a centimeter. The traditional wooden plank nestled underneath has never been more appropriate. Seats with a set of electric adjustments do not even try to attract with a grasping embrace of lateral support (for this, the Recaro was on the list of options).

You seem to be sitting on your favorite soft sofa, only instead of a TV in front of you – a massive front panel that gives rise to a feeling of security, dotted with large buttons.

Automatic, air conditioning, cruise control, electric sunroof, cooled glove compartment, standard Bose with amplifier and subwoofer – the optional set is impressive even now, and twenty-two years ago it could become the subject of black envy. This also includes the oversized trunk. The soft and spacious rear sofa with a wide armrest allows a person of average height to cross their legs, recalling images of full-size “Americans”.

You can sit here and three of us, but if you want to feel all the charm of Opel, which managed to get out in Cadillacs, avoid such offers.

In move.

According to its characteristics, the two-liter sixteen-valve, the first-born of the Ecotec family, adheres to the motor traditions of twenty years ago: 136 hp. and 185 Nm – modestly, but you can always poke your finger at the initial version of a premium competitor with the words “And he has the same!” The four-speed automatic 4L30E is also in trend and is well known to the owners of pre-styling E39.

All these excuses cannot hide the main thing – for the dynamic movement of such an engine, especially with such a box, one and a half ton Omega is frankly not enough. No matter how tense, trampling the gas pedal, no matter how you whip up the machine with sport mode, and you won’t be able to drive out when accelerating to a hundred of eleven seconds. In the summer, even more so.

When the air conditioner is on, the loss of the already precious power is clearly felt.

If you leave on the sidelines the senseless sporting ambitions in this case, then everything will quickly return to normal. You need to move gradually – “I am not late, but I am late” and measuredly – “they will not start without me.” With adequate control of the right pedal, acceleration is smooth, almost seamless. The automatic machine, having ceased to stumble in a hurry at every step, begins to calmly and imperceptibly do its work.

There is no more need to frown at the intrusive sound of an overstraining engine, too clearly giving voice after 3000 rpm – the only claim to the otherwise impeccable sound insulation. In short, the classic business class version with an initial engine.

One has to regret the absence of a V6 under the hood in the first bend. Opel confidently, without frightening rolls, stands on an arc, coming close to the edge beyond which real driving pleasure begins. It is foolish to talk seriously about skidding with such an engine and gearbox, but the chassis has a lot of potential.

I understand the disappointment of the fans of the brand, who were promised, but never given the Omega with the “eight” LS1 from Corvette. The suspension is stiff just enough so that, without failing in corners, the car manages not to shake the whole soul out of the passengers on every bump.

Opelevtsy and in this aspect tried to make a worthy rival to Mercedes and BMW.

But the market was rapidly losing interest in the budget business class. So the Omega went to the car Valhalla with a clear conscience, leaving a legacy in the form of a whole brood of Australian Holdens and even one Pontiac. Opel’s attempts to join the elite club also remained there.

After the failure of the attempt to shake the segment with the Signum hatchback, the Germans decided that they had enough, no further than the D segment.

Purchase history.

The conditions for buying a daily car from Vyacheslav were very specific – rear-wheel drive and a budget of 100,000 rubles. Naturally, there were very few options. Having looked for the order of several BMW E34s, which are in varying degrees of cadaveric decomposition, Vyacheslav remembered the Opel Omega B. The first few copies were not very different from their Bavarian compatriots in their state. But the seventh Opel was lucky.

The two-liter sedan with a gun against the background of competitors simply shone with health, despite the 1995 release and mileage of 212,000 km.

Repairs.

The first investment was in the suspension. It all started with the installation of Bilstein B4 shock absorbers and the replacement of all silent blocks in the front levers. The vertical ones were taken from the Boge catalog, and the horizontal ones were taken from the BMW seven.

They are tougher than the regular ones, which, according to experienced opelevodov, has a positive effect on the resource. When replacing the rear silent blocks, the choice fell on spare parts from Lemforder. Ball joints were taken from the same supplier.

After the new rear springs sagged, they used 40mm Chevrolet Lanos reinforced spacers, perfect for the Omega. Vyacheslav supplied the front stabilizer struts from TRW and replaced the outboard bearing of the propeller shaft.

Piston rings and valve stem seals have been replaced in the motor. There were no direct indications for this, but keeping in mind the age of the car, Vyacheslav decided not to delay with this. A new exhaust manifold was also installed, the fuel pump and camshaft sensor were replaced, as well as engine and automatic transmission mounts.

After the box suddenly went into emergency mode, an open circuit of the 2-3 gear solenoid was diagnosed. The original from GM is custom-made and expensive, an analogue with BMW markings (the 4L30E box was common for Bavarian cars) is much cheaper, but also with a waiting period of 7-21 days. Rescued a quality substitute from Alto.

Improvements.

The changes to the standard equipment began with the installation of Bose speakers, which are native to the Omega. Vyacheslav, having independently disassembled half of the cabin for this, laid the appropriate wiring, and then installed the speakers, a subwoofer and an amplifier. The next step was additional noise insulation of doors and a new rear shelf with an electric curtain.

The original Omega was fitted with a dark gray velor interior with no heated seats. After a long search, Vyacheslav found his dream – a black leather interior from a pre-styling version with electric adjustments and heating, complete with door cards. The company has a steering wheel of the 1998 model year with factory leather in excellent condition.

Also installed an additional standard brake light, cruise control, a mirror with auto-dimming and wipers with a pause adjustment mode.

Exploitation.

For four years of ownership, Vyacheslav drove 60,000 km. The main and largest investments in the car fell on the first two years. Moreover, many parts still bore factory markings. From the latter – the replacement of the windshield, the timing belt along with the rollers and the pump and the air conditioner clutch bearing that came out of the standing position.

Vyacheslav does almost all the work himself. In spare parts, he prefers official suppliers of parts for Opel like Lemforder and Boge, but offers for pre-styling Omega are decreasing every year..

Costs.

regular maintenance with oil change (Mobil 5w50) and filters (Mann) every 8,000 km gasoline – AI-95.

Plans.

In the near future, Vyacheslav plans to install a standard factory xenon and headlight washer, replace the radiator grille and fog lamp grilles with tuning options from Steinmetz. And most importantly, fight the disease of all Omega Bs – corrosion of the bottom of the doors.

Model history.

The successor to the Omega A business debuted in 1994. The rear-wheel drive sedan and station wagon were equipped with 2.0 “fours” (116-136 hp), a pair of V6 (2.5 – 170 hp, 3.0 – 211 hp) and two diesel options (2 , 0 – 101 HP and 2.5 – 131 HP). Gearboxes – five-speed mechanics and four-speed automatic transmission.
